Engineering Services by Liam Engineering and Design LLC

  

Purpose:
To evaluate the potential incident energy levels during arcing faults and to determine appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) categories and arc flash boundaries for personnel safety.


Why It Matters:

  • Helps ensure compliance with NFPA 70E and IEEE 1584 standards.
  • Reduces the risk of catastrophic injuries to maintenance personnel.
  • Supports accurate labeling of electrical panels and switchgear with arc flash      hazard information.

What It Involves:

  • Calculating available fault current and clearing times of protective devices.
  • Determining incident energy levels (cal/cm²) at various equipment locations.
  • Assigning arc flash boundaries and PPE categories.

Applications:

  • Labeling for MCCs, switchboards, panels, and transformers.
  • Planning for maintenance and energized work procedures.
  • Risk mitigation strategies, such as remote racking or arc-resistant gear.
